Pedestrians forced to jump out of the path of speeding driver trying to escape police in Melbourne's east
Pedestrians in Melbourne's east have narrowly avoided injury after a driver allegedly sped down a footpath during a police chase this afternoon.
Police say a white Audi SUV was seen travelling at speeds of up to 200 km/h and swerving in and out of traffic on Whitehorse Road in Mitcham about midday.
Police began to give chase to the vehicle, activating lights and sirens in an attempt to pull the driver over when it turned onto Station Street.

The Audi then allegedly proceeded to speed down a footpath, forcing pedestrians to jump out of the way.
"I just stepped out I saw the car and just came back running inside," witness Santosh Banbaru said.
"Luckily, no people were there, but it's very scary," another witness said.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident.
Police are hunting the driver, who fled the scene, heading west on Whitehorse Road.
