There has been a marginal improvement in elective surgery queues but patients on average are still waiting more than a month, a new report reveals.

Wait times vary greatly depending on where patients live, with Tasmanians having to wait 28 days more than Queenslanders, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found.

Almost 700,000 Australians underwent elective surgery in the past year.
