A passing motorist has rescued a nine-year-old boy and his father from their burning four-wheel-drive, after it crashed near Dubbo in central western New South Wales.

The 4WD veered off Renshaw McGirr Way in Yeoval and hit a tree at about 4.40pm yesterday, police believe.

A man who witnessed the fiery crash smashed a window and pulled the boy from the front passenger seat, and then rescued the 44-year-old driver.

The pair were treated by paramedics at the scene and airlifted to hospitals in Sydney.

The father remains in a stable condition at Westmead Hospital, a Western Sydney Local Health District spokeswoman said on Sunday.

A spokeswoman for Westmead Children's Hospital could not provide an update on the boy.
