A man has been forcibly pinned down by fellow passengers after he went "crazy" waiting for a flight at Melbourne Airport.

Video captured by witnesses shows the man being thrown to the ground by passengers last night after he began screaming and throwing objects in the terminal.

"Currently witnessing the biggest security bulls--t at Melbourne Airport," traveller Emma Louise wrote on Twitter.

"Man goes crazy throwing stuff around and staff leave it to members of the public to restrain him for ten minutes."

"He's resisting arrest and screeching how he hates Australia."

"(It's) Shocking."

The matter, which is not terror related, is now being handled by the AFP, a Melbourne Airport spokeswoman told 9news.com.au.

The 26-year-old man was taken for a mental health assessment after being arrested.

No charges have been laid and there was no threat to aviation security, an AFP spokesperson said.

"The safety of the travelling public is the airport’s highest priority," the spokeswoman said.

There was no impact to departing flights.
