Passengers flee after bus catches fire in South Melbourne
The fire started in the engine compartment.
Twelve passengers have escaped unharmed from a bus after it caught fire in South Melbourne this afternoon.
The bus caught alight and came to a halt close to the West Gate Freeway entrance on Montague St at 1.30pm.
Firefighters from the Melbourne Fire Brigade arrived on the scene and the blaze was contained within five minutes.
MFB advised motorists to steer clear of the area as the situation caused traffic delays.
“It was a small fire in the engine compartment of the bus,” MFB Senior Station Officer Darren Borschmann said.
“Investigations are taking place, but we’re not sure what caused it at this stage.”
A secondary bus arrived for the passengers soon after the fire and continued along the route.
Nobody was injured in the incident.
