Macaw's terrifying shrieks scares off potential thieves in Melbourne

A pet parrot named Versace scared off potential home invaders with its terrifying shrieks in Melbourne's north on New Year's Eve.

Video of the parrot, taken from a security camera inside a Mickleham home, shows the macaw screaming as thieves attempt to break in.

The screams become louder and louder, as the parrot becomes more distressed.

It's believed a break-in was attempted at the property just before midnight, triggering the parrot's reaction.

The high-pitched screams were enough to cause the intruders to flee, leaving behind their tools.

The macaw's owners caught the reaction on a security camera in their loungeroom.

"Best guard dog we've ever bought," owner Alexandra Kavanagh told 9News. "Better than a guard dog."

Versace's family left the house for New Year's Eve, which was the first time they had parted with the nearly three-year-old macaw.

The break-in ruffled a few feathers and the parrot refused to leave her cage.

"Eventually she did and I just kissed her for ages," Kavanagh said.

"I haven't let her go since."

Versace is enjoying plenty of snacks since the scare and she may have a few more treats soon.

"She occasionally doesn't mind a bit of KFC," Kavanagh said. "Chicken and chips as a little treat.

"I plan on buying her all new toys [too]."
