Parents in Victoria can be banned from entering their children's schools if they are aggressive or violent, under a new law introduced today.

Under the law, principals will be able to issue school community safety orders to parents, carers and other people who engage in threatening, harmful or abusive behaviour.

Such people could be stopped from entering school groups or other places where school events are taking place.

They could also be banned if they engage in threatening or abusive communication on social media.

"No one should be threatened or intimidated at work or at school," Acting Premier and Education Minister James Merlino said.

"That's why we're introducing these new laws to protect staff, students and their families.

"These vital new measures will empower our senior school leaders to take necessary actions when inappropriate behaviour is being levelled towards people in the school community."

If a parent breaches the school ban, they can face civil penalties in the Magistrates' Court.

If banned, the parent or carer can still contact the school and be informed about their child's education – they just can't enter the school themselves.

They can also make arrangements to ensure the child's attendance at school.
