Paraglider pilot dies after crashing into cliff

An experienced paraglider pilot has died after crashing into a cliff this afternoon.

The Lake Macquarie man, 62, was killed south of Newcastle, near Shepherds Hill Cottage, at 2pm.

Emergency services were called to Shepherds Hill following reports the man had lost control while flying and hit a cliff.

Bystanders rushed to the man's aid, pulling him onto the cliff and performing CPR before the arrival of emergency services who continued CPR but the man could not be revived.

"Tragically we've been called out here this afternoon for an incident involving a hang glider," a NSW Police spokesman said. 

"It's very early in our investigation at this stage. We have about a dozen witnesses to speak to before we can make any determinations of the crime.

"I am aware the family was in the close vicinity. I understand he was an experienced hang glider and this is not a new activity to him.

"There are other hang gliders in the area that came to his aid very quickly."

The spokesman said the man crashed into the side of the hilltop about two meters down from the top.  

"It's tragic that the family was here and that someone's lost their life doing something they love."

Investigations are continuing.
