Packer and Carey attend G'Day USA gala

Newly-engaged Mariah Carey was beaming as she arrived hand-in-hand with fiancee James Packer at the G'DAY USA gala in Los Angeles.

The loved-up couple walked the red carpet at the annual event in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday night.

Dressed in a long, black gown, Carey flashed her 35-carat diamond engagement ring, speculated to be worth $5 million, as she and Packer walked past the waiting media.

Billionaire businessman Packer popped the question to the American singer a week ago.

The G'DAY USA annual Gala dinner is this year honouring director George Miller with a lifetime achievement award.

Miller's latest film, Mad Max: Fury Road, is nominated for best picture at next month's Academy Awards, while Miller himself has a chance of taking home the award for best director. Fury Road has already won Best Picture at the Australian Film Institute and Critics Choice awards.

Miller last won an Oscar in 2007 for his animated film Happy Feet. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1996 for Babe and again in 1993 for Lorenzo's Oil, starring Susan Sarandon and Nick Nolte.

To date, the Australian director has won 42 awards and been nominated for 45.

Actor Joel Edgerton will also be awarded at the G'DAY USA event with an Excellence in Film Award in recognition of his critical success as a writer, actor and director, including most recently with his film The Gift.

The psychological thriller was a resounding success for Edgerton, reaping $53 million at the box office when it was made for only $5 million.

Others attending the high-profile event include Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, actor Hugh Jackman, Aussie rock group Five Seconds of Summer and Hollywood producer and director Brett Ratner, who founded RatPac Entertainment with Packer.
