Out-of-control bushfire burning in Victorian town

Firefighters will work overnight to control a bushfire burning in the town of Gembrook in Victoria.

Crews were called to the blaze at Bunyip State Park about just before 2.30pm.

An Advice message remains active for the fire, which had burned through 26 hectares of land at 7pm.

The direction of the fire has switched from south to north, and is moving towards the Tonimbuk Road area near the Four Brothers Rocks Recreation Site.

“There is currently no threat to communities, but you should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions,” Emergency Victoria said in a statement.

Bulldozers are building control lines around the fire perimeter, and firefighters will remain at the scene overnight.

Smoke from the bushfire could be seen almost 80 kilometres away, a Greensborough local told radio station 3AW this afternoon.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

It comes as temperatures soar across the state, with the mercury at 32C around 3pm.

Gembrook is 54 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.
