Origin win to be celebrated at Opera House

Sydneysiders will soon have an opportunity to welcome the victorious NSW State of Origin team at the Opera House.

Premier Mike Baird congratulated the Blues for making history after they sealed a series win on Wednesday night with a 6-4 win in game two over Queensland.

"Nine years is too long to wait," Mr Baird told parliament on Thursday.

"We have broken the drought and we want to pay tribute to them, (for) their guts and their courage and inspiration."

He announced that a people's reception will be held at Sydney's Opera House, although a date has yet to be confirmed.

Mr Baird watched Wednesday night's game with his good mate, Queensland Premier Campbell Newman.

"He always has a lot to say, until last night. He said very little last night and I absolutely look forward to him wearing a sky-blue jersey," he said, referring to a bet between the two premiers.

Mr Baird also paid tribute to the Socceroos who posted a spirited 3-2 loss to World Cup heavyweight, the Netherlands, in Brazil.

"Before the Socceroos left their shores, all the doomsayers were saying it was going to be impossible ... and the Socceroos were going to be outclassed," he said.

"Well, didn't a bit of Aussie ticker show them wrong."
