States agree on organised crime plan

Australian governments have agreed to work together to track the sale of chemicals used to create the drug ice, as well as fast tracking a system to record firearms.

The measures are included in the National Organised Crime Response Plan for the next three years, endorsed by the nation's attorneys-general and justice and police ministers at a meeting in Canberra on Friday.

Governments will develop an electronic system to capture information about the sale of precursor chemicals used to make ice.

The measure will stop organised criminals from taking advantage of the "gaps" created by different state legislation, federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan told reporters.

A national firearms interface will be fast-tracked, to ensure there's a single record for every firearm in Australia akin to "finger-printing".

Mr Keenan described organised crime as a "menace", which was more entrenched than ever before.

"Keeping one step ahead of organised criminals requires us to collaborate together," he said.
