Opinion divided as Adam Goodes booed by St Kilda fans

The Adam Goodes booing saga has been reignited after St Kilda fans were accused of booing the player during his first match in Melbourne since he took time out from the game.

Boos can be clearly heard from the crowd as Swans star Goodes lines up to kick for goal during the match at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

However, Collingwood president and radio host Eddie McGuire said the booing appeared to be within the context of the game and not racially motivated.

“Take away for a second the fact that it was Adam Goodes and you just listen to the rhythm of the sound and that is an opposition team, particularly an interstate team, playing in the home venue, lining up for goal, there’s always the boos and the jeers and all that and as he kicks the ball, it goes through, the Sydney fans, or the old South Melbourne supporters down here rally around him,” McGuire explained.

“My understanding is there wasn’t any boos or jeers for Adam in the course of play, which was an issue a couple of weeks back but hasn’t been since.”

He said he hoped it was a “parochial” level of booing that could be expected when anyone lined up for goal.

Fans took to social media last night, divided over whether or not the booing of Goodes was reminiscent of earlier weeks or simply part of the game.

The Brownlow Medallist took a week off in early August after persistent heckling by fans that was widely perceived to be racially motivated.
