Bondi 'one-punch' victim leaves hospital only a day after attack

Only a day after a one-punch attack saw him placed into an induced coma, Jake Stephenson has been released from hospital and is now expected to make a full recovery.

The 21-year-old struck his head on a Bondi footpath after being hit from behind on Sunday morning and doctors put him into an induced coma, fearing he had suffered potential brain damage or internal injuries during the attack.

But the St George's Basin man left St Vincent’s Hospital last night with bruising on the brain and extensive cuts to his face.

Mr Stephenson had watched the A-League match between Sydney FC and Melbourne City at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night before heading into Bondi with mates.

He ended up at a fast food restaurant where he and another man began arguing.

He then left the area, but at 12.30am the man allegedly came up from behind him and punched him in the head, causing him to fall and slam his head against the concrete footpath of Campbell Street.

Following the attack Mr Stephenson was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital in a critical condition, where doctors placed him into a medically induced coma.

But their fears he had suffered permanent damage soon proved unfounded and medical staff brought him back to consciousness, releasing him from hospital last night.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

His alleged attacker presented himself to Waverly Police Station shortly before 1pm yesterday and spoke with detectives.

Detectives searched the 32-year-old man's Hillside home, seizing clothing before charging him with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.

He was granted strict conditional bail and will appear in Waverley Local Court on Wednesday November 19.
