One Direction singer Zayn Malik has been bombarded with death threats after using social media to pledge his support for the Palestinians.

Malik, who was raised Muslim, tweeted the hashtag #FreePalestine to his 13 million Twitter followers, clocking up more than 150,000 retweets.

Then the 21-year-old started to take a hammering from Israeli fans.

"It broke me that one of my idols wand [sic] me to die," one message read.

Other messages were more direct, telling Malik to "kill himself" or offering to kill him instead.

Rihanna faced similar criticism when she showed her support for the Palestinians.

Like Zayne's tweet, it simply read #FreePalestine and was removed within minutes after sparking a flurry of replies.
