They were the sole occupant of the plane and are yet to be formally identified.

It is understood the plane took off from the Point Cook airbase at around 2.20pm, with flight-tracking data revealing it was due to return to the same location just before 4pm.

9NEWS understands the plane was registered to the RMIT University Flight Training facility, however it is not yet known how experienced the pilot was, or if they were a student.

Emergency crews remain at the scene this evening, with reports aviation fuel has leaked from the aircraft.

Air Crash Investigators are still en-route to the scene of the crash.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
