Major breakthrough in search for Queensland cold case killers

Police have made a major breakthrough in the cold case shooting murder of Queensland man Omega Ruston.

Detectives have linked Mr Ruston's murder to Sydney crime figures, tracking down potential evidence that could finally lead to an arrest.

Police divers spent today searching the depths of Sydney's Parramatta River, using metal detectors in hopes of locating the gun that was used to take Mr Ruston's life.

The 32-year-old construction worker was driving along the Gold Coast Highway on January 26, 2009, when he was shot dead in a suspected road rage incident.

"The firearm used in the shooting murder of Mr Ruston on the Gold Coast is an identical ballistic match to a firearm used in the Western Sydney Ink tattoo parlour drive by shooting," Queensland Police Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said.

"This has confirmed links between Mr Ruston's murder and Sydney-based outlaw motorcycle gangs and organised crime syndicates."

Nine News has confirmed that detectives are investigating Sydney crime figures including a former Nomads bikie. Police reports note three men of middle eastern appearance fleeing the scene in a maroon sedan from which the shots were fired.

"A number of items have been found - I can't comment on what those are, but they are going to be the subject of some analysis," Inspector Ahearn said.

While detectives have a number of leads, they are still appealing for any members of the public with information that may help identify Mr Ruston's killer to come forward.

"My brother will not grow old, but you will grow old forever as a coward, do the right thing and turn yourself in, before it's too late," Mr Ruston's brother Nicholas said.
