Should older drivers be re-trained for modern roads?

Older drivers face constant calls for re-training, re-licensing or even de-licensing - but one 90-year-old has hit back.

Ross, who has been driving for 72 years, told A Current Affair's Martin King he thought elderly drivers copped more criticism than they deserved.

"They're being careful, not slow," he said.

"I think careful drivers are more appreciated than hoon drivers, these days."

He said he believed some younger drivers were envious of their elders.

"We make better decisions when we're older because we take more time," he said.

"We don't take risks. We can't afford to, our licence is precious."

On the street, opinions varied.

One man backed the idea of refresher courses, while another said nobody over sixty should be allowed to drive.

A third man said he had noticed a number of annoying habits of elderly drivers.

"No indication, cutting off, or they just seem to do things out of the blue," he said.

"Just can get very annoying."
