‘Like a movie’: Motorist films police pulling gun on alleged car thief

A Melbourne motorist has filmed the moment a police officer pulled his gun on an alleged car thief in a dramatic roadside arrest.

Video captured by Brent Mitchell shows the officer pointing his weapon at a man in the driver’s seat of an orange Holden ute on Racecourse Road, Pakenham, today.

The officer then drags the ute driver from his vehicle, as more police arrive at the scene.

A female police officer can then be heard telling Mr Mitchell to “put his phone down”.

“It was like something out of a movie. You hear about it, but you never really expected it to happen to you,” he told 9NEWS.

It is alleged the ute was stolen yesterday during a burglary in the town of Beaconsfield Upper, about 13km from Pakenham.

The video comes as Victoria was found to have the highest incidence of car theft in Australia.

More than 20,000 people in the state reported their vehicles being stolen last year.
