Officer mowed down by motorcycle 'thankful for bullet proof vest'

First Constable Penny Ly has only been a member of Prahran Highway Patrol for three months but is confident that being hit by a stolen motorbike rider will only make her stronger.

Early Saturday morning, the officer was waving drivers into a breath-testing site on the Monash Freeway when she received intelligence over her radio that a possible stolen motorbike was approaching. 

She spotted the bike and waved it down.

“I saw it coming, it was riding slow, behind a car,” Constable Ly told 9NEWS.

The rider was momentarily stationary behind a line of vehicles before swerving around the cars to make a getaway. In doing so, he hit Constable Ly with the bike while driving 40km/h - throwing her into the air.

While other officers ran to the aid of their colleague, others jumped into a police car and started chasing after the rider.

They engaged in a pursuit for almost six minutes before it became too dangerous and had to stop chasing.

The officer is crediting the protection from her bullet proof vest for preventing any serious injury.

Citylink cameras were able to capture the offender who's still on the run.

Ly says she is reliving the moments she was hit every day - wondering whether she could have done anything differently to avoid being hit. Remarkably, she only suffered minor injuries but is still waiting for the results of medical tests. 

Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who has dash camera footage of the incident or the bike itself which is black Kawasaki Ninja 300, with stolen registration plates 1I4LM.
