Obeid housewives face $8 million tax bill

The wife and daughters of disgraced former NSW politician Eddie Obeid have been slapped with a combined tax bill of close to $8 million.

The Australian Taxation Office is seeking the sizeable amount from Judy Obeid, her two daughters and her three daughters-in-law, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The tax office is chasing the women, who list their occupation as 'housewife', for the money with the help of the courts after the ATO filed an action of recovery in the Supreme Court.

Mrs Obeid owes $1.86 million for the financial years 2010-2011, 2011-2012 and 2012-2013, according to court documents.

Her tax bill is understood to include more than $500,000 in interest payments and late fees.

Meanwhile, the Obeids' youngest daughter Rebecca has been slugged with a $452,000 tax bill with her sister Gemma issued with a bill for $101,335.

The ATO is reportedly pursuing the three daughters-in-law for around $900,000 each.

The tax office issued the massive tax bills following an investigation at the recommendation of the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

In 2013, the ICAC made corruption findings against Mr Obeid and his sons.

The findings were the result of a lengthy corruption inquiry which found the former Labor MP's family had personally benefited from a $30 million coal deal.

The family reportedly used the money to fund high-rolling lifestyles, including buying luxury homes and supercars.

The matter is set to return to court on April 15.
