In perhaps his most unusual appearance on TV, US President Barack Obama has eaten the mangled remains of a salmon spat out by a bear and left by a riverbank.

The dining experience captured in an episode of Running Wild shows Mr Obama being presented with the half-eaten fish by host Bear Grylls.

"Now why wouldn't the bear finish this sucker?" Mr Obama asks.

"This looks like a nice-looking piece of fish."

It's a very diplomatic remark from the president. The salmon had been ripped of its skin and head and was barely held together by Grylls.

Grylls pointed out that bears often gorge themselves on the eggs, brain and skin of salmon and discard the rest, with the fish being so plentiful at certain times of year.

With a quickly made campfire, Grylls cooked the salmon for Mr Obama to eat.

The episode was filmed during Mr Obama's three-day visit to the Alaskan wilderness, where he was looking to address the impact of climate change in the state.

The airdate of the full episode is yet to be announced.
