* He has travel documents from Papua New Guinea which allow him to come and go from PNG where he currently lives.

* He is in New Zealand on a one-month limited visa for the specific purpose of speaking at a writers conference in Christchurch.

* He must depart before his visa expires.

* If he claims asylum in New Zealand, an independent statutory process decides his claim.

* NZ immigration officers were satisfied he genuinely intends a temporary stay.

* He is fully sponsored by Amnesty International to cover his costs while in NZ, including deportation if necessary.

* He was issued a limited visa with no ability to apply for other visas and cannot appeal against possible deportation.
