Nut-roasting factory still smouldering after fire

Powered by

Smoke continues to billow from a nut factory in Melbourne’s north after fire tore through the two-storey building.

Up to 80 firefighters worked for five hours to contain the fire at the Campbellfield factory, which started around 2pm yesterday.

During the blaze, the roof of the Barry Road facility collapsed, hampering efforts to extinguish the heart of the fire.

This morning heavy machinery arrived at the scene to help crews access the fire, which was under control by 7pm yesterday but is still burning.

Residents are still asked to stay indoors, shut windows and doors and switch off heating and cooling systems.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown.
