Voller: no action over suspended sentence

Northern Territory youth criminal turned justice advocate Dylan Voller has avoided extra jail time despite violating his suspended sentence conditions.

The former Don Dale Youth Detention Centre detainee and his mother Joanne were arrested in September when an Alice Springs protest against youth prisons and Aboriginal deaths in custody turned violent.

The 20-year-old appeared in Darwin's Supreme Court on Tuesday, and while Voller's lawyers accepted the breach for obstructing traffic and disorderly conduct, Prosecutor Stephen Geary admitted they were low-level offences.

"The Crown takes no issue with no action being taken," he said.

Counsel for Voller, Peter Blackett, said the young man became understandably upset and concerned when his mother appeared to be "targeted by police" at the Black Lives Matter rally.

"This was a political protest ... a subject which is close to Mr Voller's heart," he said.

Voller was among eight people between the ages of 14 and 47 who were arrested and later released with fines.

While inside the Alice Springs police watch house in September, Voller posted live videos to Facebook saying: "I guess I'll just have to go back and do my time, take it on the chin".

Voller was jailed in 2014 for an ice-fuelled crime spree but granted bail in February to undergo rehab.

His suspended sentence is due to expire in February, and Judge Peter Barr on Tuesday agreed it would be inappropriate to make any orders in relation to the breach.

While behind bars as a teenager, Voller was tear gassed, spit hooded and shackled to a restraint chair in a scandal that sparked the NT juvenile justice royal commission.

Ms Voller, who remains on bail, will this month contest charges for threatening to kill prominent Alice Springs councillor Jacinta Price.
