Darwin crash 'horrific', police say

A car involved in a fatal Darwin crash was so badly damaged police can't tell where the passengers were sitting.

Police believe speed was a key factor in Thursday morning's crash, which killed two men aged 32 and 35.

A third man, 26, has been hospitalised with minor injuries.

"Damage to the car was so bad we couldn't tell where the seat belts were," Sergeant Bob Rennie told reporters.

"The left hand side has been sheared off; it's almost as if someone cut along the roof, cut along the side panel and took the whole thing off."

The two victims are believed to be workers in Darwin, but their next of kin have not yet been notified.

Toxicology tests for alcohol and drugs will be done on all three passengers.

Police will speak to the survivor when he leaves hospital.

The crash is the second double fatal accident in Darwin in five weeks, after two 20-year-olds were killed while speeding last month.

Sergeant Rennie urged territory motorists to drive carefully, "to make sure you get home and anybody else... doesn't get injured or killed".

"It's amazing how many people think they're ten foot tall and bulletproof and that it's never going to happen to them," he said.

"But there are thousands of families in the NT that have lost someone through silly mistakes, believing they are invincible."
