Trio arrested for NT broomstick assault

Three people have been arrested for allegedly assaulting two Alice Springs police officers with a broomstick, frying pan and crate.

Police say that while arresting an 18-year-old man wanted on an outstanding warrant at a disturbance at 11.30pm on Monday, a girl, 16, tried to free him while two men aged 34 and 37 armed with a frying pan and broom attacked the officers.

One officer was allegedly hit with the broomstick, and the girl allegedly threw a crate through the windscreen of the police van.

All three alleged assailants were arrested and will be charged.

The girl faces charges of recklessly endangering occupants of a vehicle, criminal damage, assault and being armed with an offensive weapon.

The two older men are expected to be charged with assaulting police, hindering police and being armed with an offensive weapon.
