Teen behind fatal crash to remain in jail

A teenager will remain in custody after facing a Darwin court over a high-speed, hit-and-run car crash that killed his friend and left three others in hospital, one in a critical condition.

Aaron Hyde, 19, is charged with 11 offences relating to the horror crash which ended a weekend crime spree that involved stealing a car, the armed hold-up of a pizza delivery man and a carjacking.

The series of events ended in the early hours of Monday when Hyde speeding at 180km/h ran a red light and slammed into another vehicle at an intersection on the Stuart Highway at Palmerston.

His three passengers were all hospitalised, but one of them, an 18-year-old later died from his injuries, while a second boy remains in a critical condition.

The third passenger, a teenaged girl, and the driver of the other car were in a stable condition in hospital.

Hyde fled the crash scene but police arrested him several hours later at a house in Palmerston.

He appeared barefoot in the Darwin Magistrates Court on Wednesday, with grazes on his knee and forehead.

His charges include a hit and run causing death, three counts of driving a car causing harm or death, stealing and aggravated robbery during.

Hyde did not apply for bail and will remain in custody until his case is heard again in November.
