Darwin teen dies after stolen car crash

One of three Darwin teens hospitalised after a crash involving a stolen Holden Commodore has died.

The 18-year-old man was one of four people police say were involved in a crime spree that included a car-jacking and an armed robbery, before they ran a red light while travelling at more than 180km/h and crashed into a Jeep.

The 18-year-old and two others from the Commodore were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital along with the male driver of the Jeep after the crash, which occurred about 3am on Monday on the Stuart Highway near Palmerston.

"Tragically a male occupant of the Commodore passed away," Commander Michael Murphy said in a statement, adding another passenger remains in a critical condition.

The teen believed to be the driver of the stolen car, 19-year-old Aaron Hyde, was arrested on Monday after escaping the crash.

Police say they found him after a tip off to Crime Stoppers.

The teenager's death takes the road toll in the Northern Territory to 35 - seven more than this time late year.
