Snowdon calls for immediate NT election

An election should immediately be called in the Northern Territory after Chief Minister Adam Giles was dumped from the top job, federal Labor MP Warren Snowdon says.

Mr Giles was toppled by his Country Liberal Party (CLP) colleagues on Monday night in favour of former Minister for Primary Industry and Mines, Willem Westra van Holthe.

The Queensland election result was a trigger for the vote, Mr Westra van Holthe said.

Mr Snowdon, the member for the Northern Territory seat of Lingiari, said an election should be called straight away.

"Whoever is the NT Chief Minister should call the Administrator and call an election immediately," Mr Snowdon said in a statement.

"The CLP have lost the confidence of Territorians."

He said numerous government policy decisions, including cuts to health and education spending "has burned public trust in their integrity and competence".

"Territorians deserve the opportunity to decide on the future of the Territory. Someone needs to call an election now."

CLP Member for Goyder, Kezia Purick, said there could be another challenge, or even an early election.
