NT names and shames serial fine dodgers

Serial fine dodgers owe the Northern Territory government up to $58,000 each in overdue fines, according to a website aimed at naming and shaming people into paying up.

People could also have their cars clamped and even go to prison as part of the crackdown aimed at recouping more than $63 million in fines owed to the territory government.

A man from Coconut Grove in Darwin is the worst offender, owing $57,936, while another man from Katherine owes $48,333, according to a government Fines Recovery Unit website and database launched on Monday.

The reason for the fines is not disclosed.

"This money will go a long way. We as a government could use it to help fix roads, repair civil infrastructure, build schools or fit out hospitals," Attorney-General John Elferink said in a statement.

Mr Elferink said fine defaulters could no longer evade their responsibilities without being named and shamed.

Their fellow territorians would now know who they are and how much they owe, he said.
