Restraining order on Kamitsis apartment

The Northern Territory Department of Public Prosecutions has won a restraining order over the property of a woman at the centre of a political and police scandal.

Travel agent Alexandra Cristina Kamitsis was arrested on fraud charges in November as part of a police investigation into the alleged rorting of the Pensioners and Carers Concession Scheme, which the government says it was told involved dozens of travel agents and hundreds of pensioners.

Ms Kamitsis was also the chair of NT Crimestoppers.

On Monday Supreme Court Justice Graham Hiley ruled under the Criminal Property Forfeiture Act that an inner-city Darwin flat owned by Ms Kamitsis would be restrained until the criminal proceedings against her are resolved.

If found guilty of the fraud charges and of obtaining a criminal benefit, the DPP will use the property to recover any outstanding money.

Ms Kamitsis will be able to continue using the flat, roughly estimated to be worth about $400,000, although any income derived from it will be held by the Public Trustee until the resolution of her court case.

She also co-owns other properties.

The investigation into Ms Kamitsis has had an extraordinary effect reaching into the police department and the highest level of government in the NT.

Police Commissioner John McRoberts resigned on January 14 after allegations surfaced that he interfered into the criminal investigation into Ms Kamitsis, with whom he had a relationship, and that he failed to declare his conflict of interest.

And during a leadership challenge last week, Chief Minister Adam Giles claimed that senior members of the police and a parliamentary member spread rumours about his own involvement with Ms Kamitsis and knowledge he may have had of the investigation into Mr McRoberts in order to bring him down.

A judicial review has been announced to examine the police investigation of the matter, along with three other reviews and investigations now underway.

Ms Kamitsis will face court again next month.
