Police auxiliary on trial for sex assault

A former policeman has been committed to stand trial to face allegations he sexually assaulted two women in a stairwell at the Darwin CBD police watch house.

The 48-year-old auxiliary officer, whose name has been suppressed, will stand trial on two counts of sexual intercourse without consent and one count of gross indecency, allegedly committed against three women within one week in January.

The man was working shifts at the watch house as an auxiliary officer, which doesn't require full police training.

He was releasing prisoners by taking them down a stairwell and out into a laneway behind the watch house alongside the Coles loading dock, the court heard.

There were no CCTV cameras in the stairwell, where the sexual assaults allegedly took place.

Magistrate Greg Smith told the man he was confident there was enough evidence to commit him to trial.

The man, who resigned from the NT Police, will remain on bail until he is arraigned in October.
