A photocopied $50 note has been presented at a club in Katherine and police are warning Territorians to be on the lookout for counterfeit money.

Katherine Police said someone passed a fake $50 note over the bar or in the restaurant at a club in the top end town on Friday night.

"It is obviously a fake but could be accepted by someone if they weren't looking carefully," Superintendent Megan Rowe said in a statement on Monday.

"The public is asked to be aware that there may be other notes like this in circulation."

The fake note was a paper photocopy, which blurred the distinctive features of the currency and was described as "reasonably easy to detect".

"The material from which they are manufactured is a paper, rather than a polymer, so when you crumple them up in your hand, they stay crumpled," Supt Rowe said.

"The fakes are also missing the transparent 50/50 printing in the clear window which you can see if you hold it up to the light."

Anyone who may have a suspicious note is asked to report it to police.
