NT teens charged after 500 pills seized

Northern Territory Police have charged two teenagers with drug offences following a seizure of more than 500 ecstasy pills.

Gangs Taskforce Detectives intercepted the pills at a mail distribution centre in Darwin.

"The package allegedly contained 530 pills weighing 148 grams, with a conservative street value of $16,000," Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer said.

The two men aged 18 and 19 were charged with supplying a commercial quantity drugs, and were remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Local Court on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stringer warned the public about consuming drugs that can be unpredictable and dangerous.

"Tablets sold as MDMA often contain other drugs or substances and may not contain any MDMA," he said, adding that long-term effects of substance abuse may include irreversible damage to brain functions.

"In high doses, MDMA can interfere with the body's ability to regulate temperature which can lead to hyperthermia, which can result in liver, kidney or cardiovascular failure and death," Detective Senior Sergeant Stringer said.
