NT royal commission: free legal advice

People engaging with the Northern Territory's royal commission into the juvenile justice system can now get free legal advice.

Attorney general George Brandis has announced $1.1 million in federal funding for the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA), to provide the Children in Care and Youth Detention Advice Service.

"NAAJA is the largest legal provider in the Northern Territory and has a strong track record in providing culturally appropriate services," Mr Brandis said on Monday.

With formal hearings for the inquiry set to continue on Tuesday, it will also provide referrals to solicitors, community outreach services and help accessing financial assistance for potential witnesses.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced the royal commission after shocking footage of boys being tear gassed at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre was aired on national television.
