Northern Territory Opposition Leader Gary Higgins is quitting just seven months out from the next election.

Mr Higgins announced his decision today, which will take effect from February 1, citing family reasons, including recent health issues.

"This is a personal and family decision which I have wrestled with but which I believe is the right decision," Mr Higgins said.

"My reasons for resigning the role are personal, suffice to say I have had a number of health issues recently which need attending and I cannot effectively serve as Opposition Leader while addressing those issues."

He plans to continue as the Member for Daly, supporting Lia Finocchiaro as new leader of the Country Liberals.
