NT farmers to get drought funding

Drought-hit Northern Territory farmers will be eligible for rebates of up to $25,000 for the installation of emergency water infrastructure.

Farmers will share in $3 million to pay for new livestock watering facilities such as bores, piping, tanks, troughs, pumps and fittings to better manage livestock access to water during dry conditions.

Primary Industries Minister Paul Kirby said the government recognised the critical role the pastoral industry played in regional communities.

"Feed conditions have dramatically deteriorated in several NT districts in the past four months, with the rainfall the lowest on record in many districts, particularly in the Barkly Tablelands and Central Australia," he said.

"The scheme will help boost animal welfare and support a healthy pastoral sector, which, in turn contributes to a healthy Territory economy."

The cash to farmers is being provided by the federal government as part of an initiative from the 2018 National Drought Summit.
