A Northern Territory truck driver who rolled his road train overnight was allegedly more than two times over the legal drinking limit.

The man's three-tanker road train crashed on the Stuart Highway 20 kilometres north of Elliott about 9.30pm on Wednesday.

Police say the driver was shaken but uninjured and has been charged with medium-range drink driving after he blew a breath alcohol content of .112.

"We think the major contributing factor was alcohol," Territory Duty Superintendent James O' Brien said.

The three trailers on the road train were empty at the time.

The road was partially blocked with passers-by assisting with traffic control but it has now been reopened.
