NT cop to stand trial over gun thefts

A police officer who was in charge of the Northern Territory's firearms registry will stand trial, accused of stealing several guns he was supposed to keep locked up.

Sergeant Peter Ruzsicska was charged last August with six counts of firearms theft when he was heading the NT's Firearms Policy and Records Unit.

He was responsible for approving or denying applications for gun licences.

But police say he stole six rifles, shotguns and pistols between November 2012 and March 2013.

He allegedly never registered the weapons and instead transferred them into his name.

Ruzsicska, who has been released on bail, appeared at the NT Supreme Court on Monday, where it was confirmed that his two-week trial will begin on November 14.

It is expected he will fight the charges.
