NT amnesty to hand in guns

Territorians in possession of unlawful or unlicensed firearms are being asked to hand them in under an amnesty from July 1 until September 30.

"The Northern Territory maintains an informal amnesty at all times; however, this three-month period means anybody can arrange for their firearm or other weapons to be handed in, without fear of incrimination," Police Minister Peter Chandler said in a statement on Tuesday.

The call comes after an interim review of the Martin Place siege recommending firearm amnesty provisions for all Australian jurisdictions, as well as a high-profile robbery in Darwin last month in which six firearms were stolen, and a fatal shooting two weeks ago.

In the NT, people found with an unlawful firearm face a 10-year jail term or a $306,000 fine.
