A shipment of transportable homes has arrived in the Northern Territory community of Galiwin'ku, months after residents were displaced by tropical cyclones Lam and Nathan.

The first 10 of the 60 homes will start being installed on Elcho Island and are expected to be completed by the end of May, the Northern Territory government says.

The final cluster of homes is expected to be installed and ready for residents to move in by the end of June - providing shelter for 300 people.

Once completed, the tents being used for accommodation at Camp Elcho will be returned to the NSW Rural Fire Service.

"The community has told us that they want to be actively involved in the rebuilding process," Chief Minister Adam Giles said.

The government is talking regularly with the Dilak (Leadership Group) in Galiwin'ku, he said.
