Monsoon to hit Top End, Xmas cyclone fears

Territorians are bracing for wet weather with the chance of active monsoon conditions in the Top End in coming weeks, which could increase the risk of a tropical cyclone.

A monsoon trough is expected to move into the Arafura Sea north of the NT and strengthen towards the end of this week, Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Graeme King says.

A monsoon burst is expected to continue south, which could bring daily rainfall totals of 50-100mm with flash flooding possible.

Tropical lows commonly form along the monsoon trough, and there's a heightened risk of this developing into a cyclone during an active monsoon burst.

"At this stage no tropical lows are forecast for the NT," Mr King said.

"It's too early to forecast what the weather will be doing over Christmas and BoM's forecasters will be monitoring the movements of the monsoon trough 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
