Man charged after Darwin ute crash

A Darwin man who police say was four times over the limit and speeding when he crashed his ute, throwing a passenger from the tray, has been charged with several offences and released on bail.

Police say the 22-year-old was driving out of the Darwin CBD on the Stuart Highway at 2.30am CST when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

His 27-year-old passenger in the tray was thrown from the car, suffering serious head injuries.

He was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police say the driver was more than four times over the blood alcohol limit, with a reading of 0.203 per cent, and was doing 105kph in a 70kph zone.

He was charged with driving a motor vehicle to cause serious harm, dangerous driving, high-range drink driving, carrying an adult in an open load space of a vehicle, speeding, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, and driving without a licence.

He was bailed to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on 12 May.
