Darwin travel agent to face fraud trial

The woman at the centre of an ongoing Northern Territory government travel scandal will stand trial in November to fight charges that she defrauded a pensioner travel scheme of more than $100,000.

A five-week trial date was set for November 16 in Darwin's Supreme Court on Tuesday. Xana Kamitsis, head of Latitude Travel and former chair of NT Crimestoppers, currently faces 132 charges of obtaining a benefit by deception.

Prosecutors indicated they needed more time, so Ms Kamitsis' matter will be mentioned again on July 13.

She has not yet formally entered a plea but defence lawyer Peter Maley told the court she would fight the charges.

"My client intends to plead not guilty and she will likely be found innocent," he said.

Mr Maley accused prosecutors of seeking "adjournment after adjournment" and said Ms Kamitsis "is keen to have the matter listed".

He asked for a three-week trial but prosecutors said it would require at least five weeks because it was a complicated matter. Ms Kamitsis was arrested in November for allegedly defrauding the government-subsidised pensioner concession travel scheme.

Investigations into other travel agents are ongoing, NT Police said.

The former NT Police Commissioner John McRoberts stood down in January over allegations he interfered in the investigation of Ms Kamitsis, with whom he had a relationship.

He is being investigated by the Australian Federal Police, while Crime Commander Richard Bryson was recently demoted to superintendent for failing to disclose his conflict of interest due to his friendship with Ms Kamitsis.

An inquiry announced last week will examine alleged irregularities in NT ministerial travel booked by Latitude Travel.
