A Northern Territory man accused of stabbing his estranged wife to death carried out the “frenzied attack” believing she had cheated on him, his retrial has heard.

According to the Crown’s case, Alice Springs man Darren Ashley stabbed ex-partner Kirsty Ashley 27 times at her brother's house in May 2012 because he was “intensely angry” she had left him.

“The accused became obsessed with Kirsty. He contacted her on 297 occasions over a two-week period before she sought a restraining order,” prosecutor David Morters told the NT Supreme Court in his opening statement on Monday.
