Irishman extradited to Darwin for assault

An Irish man who was allegedly attempting to flee Australia has been extradited from Sydney to Darwin to face criminal charges.

The 22-year-old man was extradited from New South Wales on Wednesday charged with offences relating to unlawfully causing serious harm during an altercation on Mitchell Street in March.

Although he was required to surrender his passport as part of his bail conditions, police say he tried to fly out of Sydney International Airport " in possession of a new Irish passport and a one way ticket out of Australia".

He was arrested by the Australian Federal Police for breaching his bail conditions.

"The apprehension of this man should send a powerful message to anyone attempting to flee the Territory that we will not stop looking for you and we will find you," Detective Senior Constable Daniel Ralph said in a statement.

The man will appear in the Northern Territory Supreme Court today.
