Drunk driver caught smuggling 20L alcohol

A Northern Territory driver who blew more than three times over the limit was also caught trying to take 20 litres of beer, wine and rum into an alcohol-protected area.

The 47-year-old was pulled over on the Central Arnhem Highway near the community of Bulman on Sunday night, and returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.169 per cent.

In his car, police found 15 litres of beer, three litres of wine and 1.2 litres of rum.

The driver was also unlicensed and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and in breach of a domestic violence order.

He was charged with seven offences, including driving under the influence.

A 45-year-old male passenger was also charged with bringing liquor into an alcohol-protected area, while a 51-year-old female passenger was issued with a notice to appear for the same offence.

The two men will appear in Katherine Magistrates Court on Monday.
