Dr G Yunupingu to be farewelled in Darwin

Prominent indigenous musician Dr G Yunupingu will be farewelled at a memorial service in Darwin next month.

Dr Yunupingu died last month, aged 46, following a battle with kidney and liver disease.

He was an ARIA award-winning artist - selling more than half a million albums singing in his native Yolngu - and had performed for US President Barack Obama, the Pope and the Queen.

He will be farewelled on September 19 at the Darwin Convention Centre.

The blind musician from Elcho Island, off the coast of Arnhem Land, first gained prominence as a member of the Yothu Yindi band and was a multifaceted artist playing the drums, keyboards and guitar but was most celebrated for his extraordinary singing voice.

The highest selling Indigenous artist in history he collaborated with some of the biggest names in music including Elton John and Sting.

"The service will be a celebration of his life and a tribute to a remarkable man and Territorian," NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner said on Wednesday.
