Another cyclone brewing off the NT

Another tropical cyclone could be brewing off the coast of the Northern Territory, a week after Cyclone Debbie hit Australia.

An active monsoon trough is sitting over the Arafura Sea, while a slow-moving tropical low is strengthening inside it.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the tropical low may develop into a tropical cyclone between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

If it does, it will be named Tropical Cyclone Frances.

"The centre of the tropical low is not expected to cross the Territory coast, however there is a risk that gales on the eastern side of the system will affect the Tiwi Islands within 24 to 48 hours," the bureau said in a statement on Sunday.

A Tropical Cyclone Watch has been issued for the Tiwi Islands.

Cyclone Debbie flooded towns across Queensland and NSW, killing a number of people in both states and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
